Helen Ethel Merritt

Helen Ethel Merritt, 97, formerly of S. 2nd Ave., Corry, Pa., died on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Homestead Hearth Personal Care Home, Centerville, Pa. She was born on July 29, 1916, in Clymer, NY., a daughter of the late Forest E. and Mary Damcott Roush. Helen was raised and educated in Clymer, NY., graduating from Clymer High School in 1934. She worked as a timekeeper at Raymond Manufacturing for over 33 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Corry, where she served on church council and was a member of the Martha Circle. She enjoyed church activities and belonged to many church groups. Helen was a past member of Rebecca Lodge, where she held all chairs and also was a member and vice-president of the Corry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and tending to her lawn and garden. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death on March 16, 1977, by her husband, Russell S. Merritt, Sr., whom she married on June 18, 1938 in French Creek, NY.; two daughters, Dorothy Merritt and Phyllis Roush; two sisters, Joyce Roush and Edna Klaus; five brothers, F. Eldred, Wilbur, Andrew, Ralph and John Roush; and a grandson, Carmen R. Merritt. Helen is survived by a daughter, Beatrice Grden of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; four sons, Russell S. Merritt and his wife Helene of Clymer, NY., Norman L. Merritt and his wife Norma of Corry, Pa., Carmen E. Merritt and his wife Vina of Saegertown, Pa., and Dennis L. Merritt and his wife Judi of Lancaster, NY.; two sisters, Maribelle Bemis of Corry, Pa., and Rachel Garfield of Palmetto, Fl.; and one brother, Dr. Claude Roush of Palmetto, Fl. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, several great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday at the First United Methodist Church, 650 Worth St., Corry, Pa., at 2 pm. Rev. William Beatty will officiate.
